A deeply personal and profoundly symbolic object:
My art journey started when I was a little over 5 years old, with our kindergarden teacher taking our group to a painting class at Palatul Copiilor in Constanta. I can still remember the building, the stairs to the first floor, the wooden door, the small room, the light coming through the wall of windows, the old tables, the dirty paint pots, the varnish smell, the stains, the sounds.
In hindsight, it was a memorable moment not only because of how it felt at the time, but because of everything that snowballed afterwards.
That day, the teacher put in front of me a page from a book with a naive Romanian glass icon, a piece of rectangular glass with rather sharp corners, black ink, a nib and 4 colours. I painted my very first art piece: a little icon of *a very wonky* Saint George slaying the dragon.
Today, I’m revisiting that first encounter and my belief that, in a way, Saint George was a silent guardian who stood behind me ever since that first brushstroke, giving me strength and courage throughout my art journey.
This scarf is a tribute to beginnings, to perseverance in the face of the unknown. An invisible guardianship cast over anyone who wears this visible shield, rooted in both sacred spirituality and worldly Romanian traditions.
Reminding us of who we were, created for who we are.
